Congratulations to the 2026 Derek Frewin Early Career Researcher Award recipient, Dr Ying Yu.
Dr. Ying Yu is an Early Career Researcher, Registered Nurse, and lecturer with over 20 years of clinical experience, specialising in dementia, ageing, and community-based care. She currently works at Adelaide University as a Senior Lecturer in the School of Nursing and Midwifery. Currently she is chief investigator on projects adapting iSupport into eight languages and implementing it with eight ethnically specific aged care providers, in partnership with Primary Health Network and Care Gateways.
The Derek Frewin Early Career Researcher Award was established by the Northern Community Health and Research Foundation in recognition of the outstanding contribution Emeritus Professor Derek Frewin AO has given to both the NCH Research Foundation and the University of Adelaide. This award is given annually.
The 2026 award was presented last night at the inaugural NCHRF Research Week Plenary Presentation by Professor Frewin and Professor Gregory Crawford AM, Professor and Domain Lead for Professionalism and Leadership at the School of Medicine, College of Health, Adelaide University and Chair of the NCHRF Grants Committee.
This award exemplifies the Foundation’s commitment and hopes for better health outcomes through our awards and funding under the Frewin Researcher Fund.This fund supports research development, early career recognition, pilot grant support and implementation, right through to translation across the full spectrum of research development: from undergraduate students, those studying a research degree at Masters or PhD level, early postgraduate researchers, to mid-career and established researchers needing targeted support.

These awards and scholarships celebrate post graduate excellence in a very practical way while helping to grow careers, knowledge and collaborative research networks. This fund also supports Adelaide medical students through scholarship grants to supplement their learning with additional domestic and international placements and conference opportunities.
