Packed Program for 2023 Visiting Professor

Updated: Nov 27, 2023

Thanks to Emeritus Professor Ian Macdonald of Nottingham University UK, for a very successful Visiting Professor Program for 2023.

In a busy program that included public lectures, grand rounds, webinars and meetings with colleagues, many South Australian community and medical health professionals were able to draw on Professor Macdonald’s expertise and research interests in the functional consequences of metabolic and nutritional disturbances in health and disease, with specific interests in obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and exercise.

A major feature of Professor Macdonald’s work has been the study of multiple body systems to evaluate whole body responses, and he drew on this in his public lecture titled ‘Diet, Lifestyle and Health’ presented at the National Wine Centre to an audience of the public, practitioners, academics and students in the field.

Professor Macdonald also presented Grand Rounds at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Modbury and Lyell McEwin Hospitals to significant numbers of busy acute hospital clinicians. In these presentations, he focused on the study of nutritional and metabolic disturbances, and the impact of diet, surgical trauma and physical inactivity on insulin sensitivity.

Online events in the Visiting Professor Program included a symposium on diabetes with colleagues from Japan, and presentations for Aged Care Nurses on the impact of high carbohydrate meals on blood pressure in older people, and for General Practitioners on intervention studies in the prevention and remission of Type 2 Diabetes.
